Meet Jill & Lisa

Our mission is to bring others a feeling of Inner Comfort, Clarity & Connection.

Together we are excited to come alongside you in your hygge journey and to bring you closer towards a life filled with simple, happy moments.

Hej (Hello in Danish)! We’re the sisters behind Hygge In a Box and we are so excited to share our passion for hygge with you.

At Hygge In a Box, we are  passionate about bringing joy and comfort to people's lives. Growing up on the Canadian prairies, our family found solace in numerous traditions that united us - from family dinners, pickling vegetables together, or gathering around an open fire, sipping hot chocolate. We've always had a fondness for creating cozy moments - ranging from camping trips and skiing through snow-covered slopes to horseback rides and exploring vintage stores. We believe that the hustle and bustle of everyday life can sometimes be overwhelming, and that everyone deserves to pause for a moment and find joy in being mindful and purposeful, or simply enjoying 'me time'. That's why we created Hygge in a Box as a special treat for relaxation and mindfulness. We hope that every box we deliver brings warmth and coziness to your life!

The items you’ll receive have been carefully selected with some strict guidelines to ensure you are receiving only premium level products and ones to feel good about! It’s important to us that we support as many Canadian businesses as possible and give back to the great country we live in. We ensure that our products are as natural as possible, made with sustainability in mind, organic when available, from ethical and Fairtrade sources and ones made with love by the makers. In deciding if we should offer monthly or seasonal boxes, we decided to offer larger sized seasonal boxes packed with hygge inspired items along with hygge tips, recipes and DIY projects to be enjoyed until the next season arrives.

We may not have a Scandinavian heritage; however, we are Canadians living in one of the coldest Provinces! We are all too familiar to know what long dark winters and short beautiful summers are like and know what it means to get the most out of each passing season. We wanted to thank the Danish and other Nordic countries that have brought the concept of hygge into our world.

So,tak skal du have (thank you in Danish)!

what is Hygge?

Hygge, (pronounced hue-gah)  is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special.

Comfort

While the meaning of Hygge is different to each, the overarching idea is that of comfort and finding joy in even the simplest of situations, and an overall sense of being cozy and content with the way life is in that moment. So many other words can be used interchangeably to describe the idea of Hygge such as charm, happiness, connection, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simplicity.

Mindfulness

Hygge is not something that someone can buy, but rather a mind-set or a way of thinking one can adopt and continually embrace. You can work to make your space or your surroundings more Hygge but being mindful in the enjoyment of the small moments is the “how to” in experiencing Hygge.

Warmth

For the Danes, Hygge is all about creating a comfortable and warm space with soft lighting and glowing candles, surrounded by family and friends. Many Nordic countries like Denmark, Finland, Sweden and others are the ones to have adopted the notion of Hygge in their everyday lives. It is believed that this is due to the long cold winters that frequent these areas, and Hygge is a way to continue to find constant happiness and warmth throughout those times of year.

Rituals

Similarly, in Canada, with so many cold, dark days, the simplicity of a candle flickering with a cup of coffee in the morning or a warm home cooked evening meal with friends can make a huge difference to one’s spirit. By creating simple rituals {such as brewing mulled wine to lighting candles at each meal to game nights to stopping at the bakery every week} we can start embracing a sense of comfort, clarity and connection all around us.

So, what do you say?

Are you ready to start your Hygge journey?
